Beat the Heat Letter
To County Commissioners Ken Dahlstedt, Sharon Dillon, and Don Munks We the undersigned are deeply concerned about the ways in which energy uncertainty and climate change will impact Skagit County, and we call upon you to act now to prepare our community to meet the challenges ahead. We believe it is vital for Skagit County to identify its vulnerabilities in the face of these challenges, and to develop a plan both to minimize the disruptions and maximize the opportunities they will present. We recognize that local governments within the Pacific Northwest and around the country are adopting emission target reductions, as well as programs to curb an unsustainable dependency on oil. We further recognize that when the challenges created by peak oil and climate change are not future risks but present problems, those communities that have prepared will have distinct advantages over those that have not. We therefore ask you 1) to immediately adopt a resolution affirming the need to be proactive in the face of climate change and fossil fuel transition, and 2) to create a task force to develop a plan that will ensure the long-term health and vitality of the Skagit County community. In the belief that the choices we make today will shape tomorrow’s impacts, we ask that you help lead the way into a future that Skagit County citizens can look forward to with confidence. Thank you for your time. I am willing to sign on to this statement:
