2007 Guemes Island Christmas Bird Count

Guemes Island Results for the 2007 Padilla Bay Christmas Bird Count

The 2007 Padilla Bay Christmas Bird Count, organized annually by Skagit Audubon, took place on Saturday, December 29. Over 60 volunteers counted birds in the 16 sub-areas of the count circle. A preliminary totaling of the species seen came to 120, about average for this count.

There are over 2,000 Christmas Bird Counts done in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America each year, all taking place between mid-December and the first few days of January, and all endeavoring to count the bird species and numbers within a 15-mile diameter circle.

The Padilla Bay Christmas Count circle centers near March’s Point. Over the years, the data which these volunteers accumulate provides a picture of trends in bird species present in the area and their number.

For some years Brenda Cunningham and I have organized volunteers to do the Guemes Island portion of the count. The count circle takes in all of the island (except the northern tip from about Shore Road to Clark Point) and a certain portion of the waters surrounding Guemes.

The following list shows the species and numbers which 7 volunteers (6 by foot and car and one feeder-watcher) found on December 29. Anyone interested in helping in 2008 can contact me at bctm@fidalgo.net.
