Guemesí New Recycling Plan

A Reply to “Thanks, Anne” in The Little Candle

While it is nice to receive surprise recognition, I must make my position clear. It is the Guemes Island Community Council that is paying for the large recycling bin near the Hall. When I saw the plastic bag stations in use at the Skagit County Fair, I realized how useful they could be on Guemes. It was the Council that gave me permission to launch the program. Following are the questions I’ve been asked and the answers I’ve given about how to use these new facilities.

Can anyone on the Island put recyclables in the big bin at the Center?

Yes, indeed you may. In fact, you are encouraged to fill it up prior to the every-other Friday pickup. Please read the directions on the top of the lid about the type of materials that can be recycled.

What can I put in those plastic bag stations that I see on the Guemes-side Ferry Dock, at the Center, in School House Park, and at Young’s Park?

Drop in cans and bottles—both glass and plastic. Waste Management prefers that all lids and the hard plastic rings be removed from plastic bottle necks.

What’s all the talk about weighing the recycled material? Is there a scale at the Center?

No, the Center does not have a scale. You can add your household recycling to the big bin at any time. Only those valiant volunteers who collect the plastic bags from the stations need worry about the weight of the recycled materials they pick up.

What’s so special about those plastic bag stations?

Those handy recycle stations are on loan from Skagit County’s Waste/Recycling Program. The County purchased the recycle stations through a grant from Washington State, and so County personnel are charged with tallying of the amount of recyclables kept out of the general garbage stream.

How’s the program working?

So far, volunteers have emptied over 150 lbs of recyclables since the stations were installed the first of September. Winter use may slow down, but imagine the number of pounds saved from the garbage dump next summer.
