What's Going On? The bank along South Shore Road is continuing to erode both on the top from runoff and from weather and tides below.

Why Now? A recent Geotechnical evaluation of the bank's stability strongly recommends that Skagit County take further steps than the current 12,000 lb. weight restriction on South Shore Road to ensure public safety.

What is Skagit County Doing? Beginning in March, South Shore Road will be restricted to one lane at four different locations between Guemes Island Road and Channel View Drive/Holiday Boulevard. In addition, the speed limit on South Shore Road will be reduced to 25-mph. All of these measures shall remain in force until a permanent solution is implemented.

What About Truck Traffic? Current written exemptions to the weight restriction will be reviewed and revised to allow very limited use of the road for necessary services and supplies. However, the current 12,000 lb weight limit will remain and be strictly enforced.

How Long Will It last? As stated, these restrictions will be in place until Skagit County Public Works has formulated a permanent solution, secured adequate funding, and completed important upgrades to this vital Guemes Island road. This process could take a few years to complete.
